Today is my daughter's, Bronwyn's, birthday. Happy Birthday
sweetheart.
On the birthday and holiday cards she gives me she writes these
wonderful messages about how I've been an inspiration and role-model in
her life and other heart touching things. She isn't married and
has not had children yet, (although she does have a boyfriend we all
love), so she hasn't yet experienced the inspiration derived from
your own children.
Some would say that much of what I've done in life, I've done for other
people. And they would say this was wrong because you shouldn't
live your life for others. I disagree. But perhaps they
haven't had the right "others" in their life.
I'm not a saint. I derive a great deal of self-worth in making
the people I love proud of me. My father was a farmer, and I've
basically worked full time since I was about 12 because I wanted him to
be proud of me. I met and fell in love with my wife, and worked
my butt off in college and later in my jobs because I wanted her to be
proud of me. We had children and I made time to be active with my
family because I wanted them to be proud of me. This included
stints running the cub scouts my son was involved in and teaching the
Sunday school classes both of my kids were in. I even have to
admit, I worked harder at work, because I wanted my bosses to be proud
of me.
Some day we'll have grandchildren, and I'll want them to be proud of me
too. Although unborn, they are already an inspiration to
me. Creating this company is in part to be ready for them.
So we won't have the daily grind of working for a stockholder beholden
company, and can be the best grandparents any child has ever had.
So for now,
Back to work. Talk to you soon.
